Application of Oil and Gas Subsurface Evaluation Methodology to Geothermal: The Value of Data. Tom Bradley, SPE Distinguished Lecturer

The energy landscape is changing, and renewable sources of energy are gaining in importance. As part of this, geothermal energy has the ability to be a key contributor as it can supply a constant dependable baseload for a wide range of uses. The subsurface knowledge required is very similar to that needed for successful hydrocarbon exploration. In this presentation, Tom will discuss how the subsurface information needed for success in the two industries is very similar, show the value of data, how well established oil and gas methodologies can be applied to help in the success of geothermal projects, and how the oil and gas industries can contribute to the success of geothermal energy.

Topsides UK 2021 – Virtual Events.

Topsides UK continues to bring together industry bodies, operators, supply chain and contractors to share knowledge, pain points, solutions, and innovations for the benefit of the wider industry. With the current restrictions to personnel on board (POB), and associated challenges that this brings to production and efficiency targets which have remained the same, the industry has continued to find new and innovative ways of maintaining operations. This year’s conference programme will bring together technical experts from both within and out with the industry to share case studies and lessons learned from the past 12 months.

Panel Discussion. COP 26 – What Does It Mean For O&G?

Technical Webinar. Oil & Gas Authority Decommissioning Strategy. Margaret Copland, OGA

The OGA is committed to maximising the economic recovery of UK oil and gas and to enabling the achievement of the UK Government’s commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2050. Ensuring that decommissioning is carried out in a timely and cost-effective manner not only helps value creation from the UKCS, but also demonstrates industry’s commitment to responsibly managing the UK’s petroleum legacy. The presentation will explain the OGA’s decommissioning strategy with an emphasis on well decommissioning which is estimated to cost around £27bn and how well decommissioning has a significant overlap with CCS projects.

Virtual Event – How to Develop Viscous Oil in a Net Zero Basin. Steve Brown, Orcadian & Joel Maisey, Crondall Energy

The conventional wisdom is that viscous oil means high emissions. That has been true in the past, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Orcadian Energy licenced the Pilot oilfield in 2014 and has settled on a polymer flood approach to recover 79 MMbbls of 2P Reserves from the 263 MMbbls of viscous oil in place in the Pilot oilfield. The development scheme recovers this oil with world leading low emissions. We show how this was achieved without significantly increasing the overall cost of the development.
