Biography:

Mark graduated with honours in Geology from the University of Leicester and has over 40 years of experience in the oil and gas sector starting in 1981. Mark worked offshore and onshore as a Well Engineer, Drilling Supervisor and Drilling Manager for various Operators and Well Management Companies during his career in a variety of environments and in several locations around the world.

Marked worked as Technical Manager at Aberdeen Drilling School managing the changes to Well Control training dictated by OGP 476 as an accredited IADC/IWCF Well Control Instructor. Mark also specialised in HPHT and Deepwater Engineering and Operations, DWOP and DWOS training, Standard and HAZOP GAP Analysis and Abandonment training. Mark is an expert user of drilling simulator equipment.

Mark spent 2 years at the Oil & Gas Authority in the role of Senior Wells Engineer regulating and stewarding the MER (UK) strategy for wells and well abandonment. Mark was a member of 3 Wells Task Forces, set up to encourage performance enhancements and industry collaboration.

Mark currently works as Technical Manager at Safe Influx and is responsible for database analysis, module development, product QA and QC and system deployment and is a genuine supporter of automation processes to improve safety and enhance performance.

Mark is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Energy Institute (EI) and the Intervention and Coiled Tubing Association (ICOTA),

Abstract: Recently released data analysis of worldwide Well Control Incidents shows that human error and organisational failures contribute to over 60% of Well Control Incidents over the entire lifecycle of a well.

Although training standards have improved over the past number of years, trend analysis demonstrates that the overall occurrence of these events remains high. In the current climate where the management of risk and reduction in impact is of strategic importance to all operations, further technical innovation is required to ensure that a reduction in Well Control Incidents is at the forefront of industry recovery

By automating the well control process, influx size can be reduced, driller attention can be focussed on the recovery plan and Operators can be confident that procedures will consistently be followed and that the well will automatically achieve a failsafe closed status if any pre-agreed anomaly is measured

Mark Gillard, Technical Manager at Safe Influx Limited will use this session to look at recent data, detail an analogy in industry automation (with its benefits) and introduce the Automated Well Control system developed by Safe Influx which will integrate into existing traditional and cyber rig applications, will complement MPD applications and provide additional cost and time benefits for well operations.
