Winners of 2023 SPE Aberdeen Student Bursary Awards Announced
With the judging process for 2023 student bursary awards now complete, SPE Aberdeen are delighted to award a total of £20,000 in bursaries. The section supports 5 universities across Scotland (Heriot-Watt University, Robert Gordon University, University of Aberdeen, University of Dundee and University of Strathclyde) and the section’s student bursary awards have been in the universities’ calendars for over 40 years. During this time the section has awarded over £500,000 in bursaries.
The bursaries are awarded to students currently undertaking energy related degrees at various levels, from undergraduate to PhD. Each applicant was judged on the quality of their academic work, their intent to embark upon a career in the energy industry and their active involvement with SPE. There were 37 applicants received, and after initial judging we had 20 finalists, of which 12 were invited to present, online, and in person to a judging panel which consisted of SPE Aberdeen board members, SPE Aberdeen sponsors, industry professionals and SPE Aberdeen Student Development committee members. The presentations covered a range of topics including Energy Security, Climate Change, Skills Transfer and Energy Transition.
This final stage of the judging process resulted in the outstanding bursary of £3,000 being awarded to Agga Agga, who is studying for an MSc in Oil and Gas Engineering at Robert Gordon University, and two runner up awards of £2,000 each to Kratika Khatri, a student at Robert Gordon University studying MSc in Accounting and Finance (Oil and Gas), and Efemena Claire Karieren, a student of Robert Gordon University studying MSc in Information Technology in the Energy Industry.

This year, the quality of submissions was impressive and we were extremely encouraged by the students applications. The presentation stage of the judging process gave us the opportunity to meet, and personally engage with the finalists and hear the passion in their presentations, it really is exciting the future journey of these promising individuals. Their professionalism, and commitment to the process was clear and made the judging a tough but inspiring and rewarding experience. It is again fantastic to see, year after year, the calibre of the students and the passion they have for the energy industry; as the industry looks to the next generation, and the energy transition going forward, i think the industry will be dealt in very good hands. The events of 2020 require no explanation, it has changed life for the last 7 months and continues to do so. SPE Aberdeen has a mission handed down from SPE International “to collect, disseminate, and exchange technical knowledge” and “to provide opportunities for professionals to enhance their technical and professional competence”. Due to the issues with our typical delivery, many like-minded people congregating in the same room discussing and sharing knowledge, we have had to change our mode of operation somewhat.
Digitalisation offers considerable opportunities for the energy industry as it moves towards achieving 2050 net zero targets, which includes increasing efficiency and decreasing costs. These opportunities and the challenges, which need to be overcome to maximise these opportunities, will take centre stage at next month’s joint virtual conference between SPE Aberdeen and the Institute of Measurement Control (InstMC).
The clock is now ticking to reach the target of Net Zero by 2050 in the UK (2045 in Scotland). The oil and gas industry is a critical part of this transition to net zero and has the potential to be the leader in developing the solutions which will unlock a new, low carbon economy. This pivotal role of the oil and gas industry was clearly recognised recently by the Scottish Government with the £62 million Energy Transition Fund to support net zero projects.
















Beginning his career at NASA, Mason contributed to designing and building prototype lunar rovers, electric cars, and humanoid robots. An active supporter of robotics education, Mason continually volunteers with the FIRST and VEX Robotics Competitions.
Former astronaut Robert J (Bob) Cenker flew on the space shuttle Columbia on a six day mission in 1986 as a payload specialist. He performed a variety of physiological tests, observed the deployment of the RCA Satcom Ku-1 satellite, and operated primary experiment, an infrared imaging camera. Bob has extensive experience in telecommunications and satellite industries.






Wonuola led the SPE YP’s section very successfully and Lalit will continue his efforts. As a graduate in petroleum engineering, he has been involved in SPE from his undergraduate college days in India. After moving to Aberdeen, he was president of the student chapter at RGU while completing his Masters. After graduating it was a seamless transition to the SPE YP team in Aberdeen. Lalit has been a member of this team for four years volunteering in different capacities. As a team, they have organised various events over the years for students as well as YPs, such as SPE Petroleague and Emerging Engineers Forum.
