Chair’s Address: November 2017

Student members make up about 25% of our membership, As the future of our industry, they are a much-valued part of our section.

We support 5 student chapters in universities across Scotland (Aberdeen, RGU, Dundee, Heriot Watt and Strathclyde). At our section awards ceremony held during Offshore Europe, the Heriot Watt team was presented with the best student chapter award,  with the University of Dundee student chapter being highly commended – well done to both.

The student chapters are supported by the section through the Student Development Committee. Now that the new academic year is well underway this Committee is busy visiting all the student chapters, introducing them to SPE and explaining the benefits of being a student member. More details on how the committee supports the students are available on our website.

The student chapters operate as largely independent groups – usually registered as a “society” at their university.  They organise a wide variety of professional and social activities. A number of field trips have taken place this year – to the PX Limited Gas Plant at St Fergus, Shell’s Mossmoran NGL Plant and to Maersk Oil’s facilities in Aberdeen. The team from Heriot Watt made it all the way to the finals of Petrobowl at ATCE 2017 – a fantastic achievement and the only team from the UK to do so.  Each chapter regularly has industry professionals joining them and give presentations. They are always interested in hearing from members interested in visiting, giving presentations and talking to the students so please let me know if you would like to be involved (aberdeen-chair@spe-uk.org).

Our annual student bursary awards were launched at the end of last month; the deadline for receipt of applications is 27 November with the awards made early 2018. We are proud that this year, we are again in a position to award up to £20,000 – 3 x £2500 scholarships and 15 x £500 awards.  This is made possible by the modest surplus that we make from some of the events we hold throughout the year. Each year, SPE selects approximately 30 individuals who are experts in their field and capable speakers to serve as Distinguished Lecturers. They travel the world sharing their knowledge by presenting at SPE section meetings.

Do you know individuals who might be great candidates? If so, nominate them to this esteemed program today!

The co-founder of an organisation which aims to boost gender balance in the oil and gas industry will today pick up a prestigious award from the Women’s Business Council at a reception held at the House of Commons.

Jenny Junnier, chair of the AXIS Network and a senior manager at Deloitte in Aberdeen, will receive the Women’s Business Council award for Getting On- an award given to those who help women enhance their careers.

The awards, now in their third year, celebrate professionals working to support women’s contributions to economic growth.

Founded in 2014, the AXIS Network, aims to promote gender diversity in the oil and gas industry. Over the last 3 years Jenny and the AXIS Network committee have grown the group from 20 to more than 620 members from 160 organisations in the North East of Scotland.

Jenny said: “It’s an honour to receive recognition for what we’re trying to achieve in the oil and gas industry. When we launched, we didn’t appreciate that oil and gas was about to enter one of its toughest-ever periods. Back in 2014, we struggled to find any women heading up energy companies in Aberdeen, but now you can point to a number in senior positions.”

As the industry recovers and seeks to implement the recommendations laid out in the Wood Review, women have an increasingly important role to play  providing an alternative view of how to take oil and gas forward and build a more collaborative future.

Graham Hollis, senior partner for Deloitte in Aberdeen, said: “A massive congratulations to Jenny for an outstanding commitment to oil and gas as well as championing women in business. The industry needs to forge a collaborative future and to achieve this we must recognise the current challenge and promote diversity”

SPE Aberdeen and AXIS Network work closely together under their MOU created in 2015.

Surveillance Fishbones from SPE Aberdeen’s 3rd Inwell Flow Surveillance and Control Now Available

The Surveillance Fishbones are a product of breakout session by the participants of the SPE Aberdeen’s 3rd Inwell Flow Surveillance and Control Seminar 3rd October 2017.

The output is a snapshot of the collective input and knowledge on the day and is by no means a definitive list.  The information presented is not representative of the conference sponsors.

The fishbones are intended to be an introduction to the various tools and techniques that exist in the oilfield to study various reservoir, wells and optimisation themes.

They are grouped into the themes of pressure, integrity, vertical lift, inflow performance, reservoir characterisation and well testing & performance.

Different tools and techniques should be easily searched for and discovered on the web, the fishbones should serve as a handy reminder or a prompt for engineers and managers.

The concept of publishing a surveillance toolbox arose of out the Oil and Gas UK’s Reservoir and Wells Optimisation Taskgroup’s annual forum where the challenge to get appropriate surveillance was identified in the top 5 initiatives that could promote more  production benefitting interventions.  The SPE surveillance committee adopted the initiative and incorporated it into their 2017 agenda.

Distribution and use of the diagrams is widely encouraged by the SPE’s surveillance organising committee, any updates, forgotten best practices or new techniques can be incorporated into a similar breakout session in the conference to be held in 2019.

OAA Trophy Design Competition Winner Announced

MEET OUR OAA TROPHY DESIGN COMPETITION WINNER

We are delighted to announce that the trophy for this year’s Offshore Achievement Awards has been chosen.

Each year, we run a competition for Robert Gordon University students to design the prestigious trophy. After weeks of research and intensive work on building prototypes, third year students studying Three Dimensional Design at Grays School of Art pitched their concepts to the judging panel. The standard of design was very high, and after much deliberation by the panel of six judges, Robin Pioche was announced as the winner of our 2017 competition.

Ian Phillips, SPE Aberdeen Chairman, said:

We have been blown away by the ever higher standard of designs we see each year. It was an incredibly difficult job to choose just one, but Robins design really stood out for us and embodied the ethos of the Offshore Achievement Awards. We particularly liked his use of metals that will gradually corrode, changing colour and visibly representing the passage of time.

Entries to the Offshore Achievement Awards, sponsored by TAQA, are open until Thursday November 30.

The black tie ceremony will take place at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre on Thursday 22 March 2018.

Lalit Bhamare – New SPE Aberdeen Section YP Committee Chair

In October this year, Lalit Bhamare took over from Wonuola Scott as SPE Aberdeen Young Professionals (YPs) Chair. lalit-bhamareWonuola led the SPE YP’s section very successfully and Lalit will continue his efforts. As a graduate in petroleum engineering, he has been involved in SPE from his undergraduate college days in India. After moving to Aberdeen, he was president of the student chapter at RGU while completing his Masters. After graduating it was a seamless transition to the SPE YP team in Aberdeen. Lalit has been a member of this team for four years volunteering in different capacities. As a team, they have organised various events over the years for students as well as YPs, such as SPE Petroleague and Emerging Engineers Forum.

Over the years, the YP Aberdeen section has organised fantastic events such as Simplified Series and Unplugged 360. Their aim this year will be to maintain this standard and attract more industry leaders to share their ideas with YPs on this engaging platform. With the market showing signs of improvement, Lalit wants to encourage YPs and students to engage more with the industry on various platforms which improve job prospects as well career progression. With this in mind, the YPs have a great line up of speakers for the Simplified Series and are also collaborating with other societies on a joint event taking place later this month on soft skill development.

Lalit recently commented: “SPE Aberdeen YP committee is a collaborative team which comes together to organise events and be a part of multi-cultural team. Volunteering in SPE Aberdeen provides an opportunity to learn many soft skills such as commitment and leadership in a fun and stimulating way. These skills go a long way in career development for anyone working in the industry. We as an SPE YP team would like to welcome new volunteers to be a part of SPE YP to collaborate with us for organising more events and make new friends along the way”.
