 YP Simplified Series Presents:

High Pressure Well Kill in Iraqi Kurdistan

Bob Menage, Drilling Fluids Consultant

Registration and networking from 6.00 pm, with the event starting at 6.45 pm

Outline:

September 2013 to March 2014.

Location: Kurdistan Regional Governate, Iraq . Sulaymaniyah, Kifri / Kalar.

Required to build a non formation damaging completion fluid to 2.41 SG (20.1 ppg) in order to test and put into production a high volume, high pressure oil well.

Hasira 1. This well was drilled to depth and tested . Following perforation the well was unable to be controlled at 2.11 SG (19 ppg) and was killed using a cement plug. The cement plug was drilled out and the well displaced to a novel drilling fluid purpose built for this job. Due to the location in Iraq and the local environmental laws it was not possible to use a high density clear brine. The option was to build a heavy fluid from trucked in material.

Barite weighted Bentonite Mud was used for cleaning out the cement plugs. However , at 2.41 SG the Barite weighted mud tended to settle out and was difficult to control. This heavy Barite weighted Mud was displaced to a purpose built Formate based fluid. Weighted with Manganese Teteroxide (Mn3O4).

This is an industry first at this density. The well was re-perforated and controlled at 2.41 SG (20.1 ppg). The presentation shows the processes required.

Biography:

bob-menage-photoBob started work as a Well Logging Engineer with Core Laboratories, Texas, in 1979 after leaving university with a geology degree . After a year working in the Libyan Oilfields he went to Forex-Schlumberger, Billiere, in Pau, south west France and completed an IADC training course working on drilling rigs in France from 1980-82 . He then went to Baroid Drilling Fluids, Houston, and followed Fluids Engineering (Mud Engineering) from 1982 to 2014 when he retired from working on rigs. He currently  volunteers as a STEM instructor (Science Technology Engineering and Maths) for the local primary schools.
